Container movement decreased 3.3% year on year to 1.215 million TEUs among 12 Asian economies in April 2013. Exports from Japan to the 11 other nations in the region went down 7.9% to 166,000 TEUs, and imports, 9% to 194,000 TEUs in April.

In the first four months (January-April), 4.698 million TEUs were handled on the intra-Asia trade, improving 2.6%. During the four-month period, exports from Japan waned 2.3% to 633,000 TEUs, while imports declined a minute 0.1% to 769,000 TEUs.

Looking at containerized shipments moved from Japan in April by destination, growth was registered for those to Thailand, increasing 2.9% from a year earlier to 22,000 TEUs; to the Philippines, 5.8% to 6,000 TEUs; to Singapore, 3% to 4,200 TEUs and to Cambodia, 12.1% to 540 TEUs. On the other hand, exports to China fell 16% to 60,000 TEUs; to Taiwan, 4.4% to 18,000 TEUs; to South Korea, 8.1% to 15,000 TEUs; to Hong Kong, 3.2% to 13,000 TEUs; to Indonesia, 4.9% to 10,000 TEUs; to Malaysia, 2.6% to 8,500 TEUs; to Vietnam, 3.8% to 8,400 TEUs and to Myanmar, 46.5% to 350 TEUs.

As for imports to Japan, only those from Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines increased year on year, going up 5.3% to 20,000 TEUs, 21.9% to 12,000 TEUs and 19% to 8,000 TEUs, respectively. Containers from Cambodia remained nearly unchanged at 90 TEUs. Shipments from the other sources all diminished, with those from China decreasing 13.5% to 86,000 TEUs; from South Korea, 11.6% to 19,000 TEUs; from Taiwan, 20% to 16,000 TEUs; from Indonesia, 10.7% to 12,000 TEUs; from Hong Kong, 6.7% to 10,000 TEUs; from Malaysia, 13.6% to 6,600 TEUs; from Singapore, 7.8% to 3,100 TEUs and from Myanmar, 10.5% to 280 TEUs.
