Container throughput at Hong Kong plunged by 12.2% year on year in April to 1.734 million TEUs due mainly to slowdown of operations at the port caused by a 40-day labor strike at the Kwai Tsing Container Terminal which ended on May 6 after dockworkers accepted a compromising 9.8% wage hike. During the labor dispute, approximately 100 container ships canceled calls at terminals in Hong Kong.

The double-digit decline allowed the contiguous Port of Shenzhen to overtake Hong Kong as the world's third busiest container port. Shenzhen ports handled 1.821 million TEUs in April. For the first four months, Hong Kong's throughput totaled 7.054 million TEUs while Shenzhen ports processed 7.101 million TEUs.
