Container exports from Asia to Europe amounted to 1.87 million TEUs in May, up 3.1% year on year, registering seven consecutive months of growth and hitting a new record for the month of May, according to data tallied by the Japan Maritime Center (JMC) from data provided by the U.K.'s Container Trades Statistics (CTS). From the beginning of the year through the month in question, they totaled 8.88 million TEUs, up 11.7%.
In May, 1.48 million TEUs were shipped from China and Hong Kong, up 3.4%; 144,086 TEUs from other parts of Northeast Asia, down 9.8%; and 247,523 TEUs from Southeast Asia, up 10.6%.
By destination, 1.16 million TEUs were destined to North Europe, up 3.1%; 337,503 TEUs to the Western Mediterranean, up 4.1%; and 370,054 TEUs to the Eastern Mediterranean, up 2.1%.
Machinery, EVs, and auto parts and components from China and auto parts and components to Mediterranean nations were brisk, the JMC said. As the EU has enforced strict rules on imports from China, it added that it is necessary to keep an eye on how they will impact container movement.
Meanwhile, imports from Europe to Asia numbered 511,612 TEUs in May, up 4.2%, marking two back-to-back months of growth, while in January-May, they added up to 2.5 million TEUs, down 0.2%.
By origin, 331,082 TEUs were imported from North Europe in May, up 0.3%; 87,932 TEUs from the Western Mediterranean, up 13.9%; and 92,598 TEUs from the Eastern Mediterranean, up 10.5%. By destination, 242,950 TEUs were moved to China, up 2.5%; 109,404 TEUs from other parts of Northeast Asia, down 8.8%; and 159,238 TEUs from Southeast Asia, up 18.8%.
