Japan’s six major ports handled 1.18 million TEUs of foreign-trade containers in May, up 0.1% year on year, according to statistics compiled by the nation’s transport ministry. Exports accounted for 562,219 TEUs, down 2.9%, and imports, 615,498 TEUs, up 3%.
Individually, Tokyo was responsible for 367,332 TEUs, up 0.1%, which consisted of 160,049 TEUs of exports, down 2.9%, and 207,283 TEUs of imports, up 2.5%. Kawasaki processed 6,935 TEUs, down 7.1%, exporting 3,755 TEUs, down 5.9%, and importing 3,180 TEUs, down 8.5%. Containers to and from Yokohama amounted to 235,939 TEUs, up 3%, of which 119,510 TEUs were exported, down 3.9%, and 116,429 TEUs were imported, up 11.3%. Throughput decreased 0.8% to 219,152 TEUs at Nagoya, where exports shrank 0.1% to 111,697 TEUs, and imports, 1.5% to 107,455 TEUs. Osaka handled 173,631 TEUs, down 2.6%, comprising 77,754 TEUs of exports, down 5.2%, and 95,877 TEUs of imports, down 0.5%. Kobe processed 174,728 TEUs, up 0.7%, as exports declined 2.8% to 89,454 TEUs, but imports swelled 4.6% to 85,274 TEUs.
