U.S. container imports from Japan decreased 0.2% year on year to 51,326 TEUs in June (based on volumes at ports of origin), according to Descartes Datamyne. From the previous month, however, they grew 9.1%.
Direct shipments accounted for 35,625 TEUs, up 7.1% year on year, while the remaining 15,701 TEUs were transshipped on the way, down 13.5%, which represented a transshipment rate of 30.6%, down by 10.4% from May.
In the first half (January–June), the U.S. imported 308,011 TEUs from Japan, down 2.5% year on year. The total consisted of 199,644 TEUs of direct shipments, down 5.4%, and 108,367 TEUs of transshipments, up 3.4%, accounting for 35.2%.
By port of origin, 72,078 TEUs were from Tokyo, down 13.1%; 60,057 TEUs from Nagoya, down 4.5%; 40,636 TEUs from Kobe, down 10.1%; 19,734 TEUs from Yokohama, up 39.2%; and 2,026 TEUs from Shimizu, up 8.5%.
