The Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG)’s Bureau of Port and Harbor will this fiscal year call for collaborators on a project to further increase container deliveries to and from the Port of Tokyo during off-peak hours.
Trucks tend to access the Port of Tokyo’s container terminals in the afternoon and evening. Depending on the time of year and day, they may have to wait in line to taking and bringing containers.
To address this issue, the TMG advises that containers be carried to and from the port during morning and other hours when congestion is not heavy at the container terminals. In fiscal 2024 and 2025, it joined hands with shippers and logistics services providers on similar projects and verified positive effects, such as shorter waiting times and improved transport efficiency.
Based on these effects, the TMG will develop a mechanism in which shuttle services providers are responsible for container hauling between depots and the container terminals so as to realize off-peak container deliveries even in the morning.
