26.07.06WCI Hikes 9% in Week 27
The Drewry World Container Index (WCI) hiked 9% from the previous week to $4,530 per FEU in Week 27 due to rate increases on the trans-Pacific and Asia–Europe trade routes. From a year earlier, the index was up 61%.
On the trans-Pacific trade route, spot rates continued to strengthen, with those from Shanghai to New York rising 11% ($753) to $7,902 per FEU and from Shanghai to Los Angeles, 10% ($599) to $6,349 per FEU.
On the Asia–Europe trade route, spot rates increased as carriers implemented higher freight-all-kinds (FAK) rates and peak season surcharges (PSSs) amid strong demand. Freight rates from Shanghai to Genoa rose 10% ($601) to $6,360 per FEU and those from Shanghai to Rotterdam, 7% ($290) to $4,682 per FEU.
