The Port of Tokyo moved 353,773 TEUs of foreign-trade containers in March, down 0.8% year on year, according to preliminary statistics unveiled by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG)’s Bureau of Port and Harbor. The total consisted of 258,864 TEUs of loaded containers, down 5%, and 94,909 TEUs of empty containers, up 13%.

More specifically, Tokyo exported 73,634 TEUs of loaded containers, up 4.6%, and 93,840 TEUs of empty containers, up 13.6%, and imported 185,230 TEUs of loaded containers, down 8.3%, and 1,069 TEUs of empty containers, down 21.8%. Domestic containers totaled 43,974 TEUs, down 23.5%. In total, 277,086 TEUs were loaded containers, down 5.7%, and 120,660 TEUs were empty containers, up 0.6%.

In the first three months (January–March), Tokyo exported and imported a total of 750,188 TEUs of loaded containers, down 0.4%, and 276,773 TEUs of empty containers, up 7.1%. As for exports, 187,753 TEUs were loaded, up 1.5%, and 274,404 TEUs were empty, up 8.1%. Imports comprised 562,435 TEUs of loaded containers, down 1%, and 2,369 TEUs of empty containers, down 47.6%.

Looking at domestic containers, 52,142 TEUs were loaded, down 6.2%, and 74,464 TEUs were empty, down 13.7%. In total, 802,330 TEUs were loaded, down 0.8%, and 351,237 TEUs were empty, up 1.9%.
