Container movement grew remarkably on the intra-Asia trade in January 2013, surging 14.3% year on year to 1.189 million TEUs.

In breakdown, 1.118 million TEUs of dry containers were traded among 12 economies in the region, increasing 14.3%, while reefer containers accounted for the remaining 70,000 TEUs, growing 14.7%.

Shipments to and from Japan were both steady, rising 12.6% to 204,000 TEUs and 3.9% to 136,000 TEUs, respectively.

To look more closely at imports to Japan, those from China amounted to 97,000 TEUs (up 19.2%); from South Korea, 20,000 TEUs (up 6.4%); from Taiwan, 17,000 TEUs (up 50.6%); from Thailand, 17,000 TEUs (up 4.6%); from Indonesia, 13,000 TEUs (down 5%); from Vietnam, 11,000 TEUs (up 8.1%); from Hong Kong, 10,000 TEUs (down 6.9%); from Malaysia, 7,400 TEUs (down 1.1%); from the Philippines, 7,400 TEUs (up 7.6%); from Singapore, 3,300 TEUs (down 8.9%); from Myanmar, 250 TEUs (down 31.9%) and from Cambodia, 120 TEUs (down 3.9%).

As for exports from Japan, those to China totaled 50,000 TEUs (up 13.8%); to Thailand, 19,000 TEUs (up 20.8%); to Taiwan, 16,000 TEUs (up 0.64%); to South Korea, 12,000 TEUs (down 2.8%); to Hong Kong, 10,000 TEUs (up 3%); to Indonesia, 8,400 TEUs (down 8.1%); to Malaysia, 5,900 TEUs (down 16%); to Vietnam, 5,000 TEUs (down 24%); to the Philippines, 4,000 TEUs (down 0.53%); to Singapore, 3,000 TEUs (down 11%); to Cambodia, 400 TEUs (up 7%) and to Myanmar, 200 TEUs (down 70.2%).
