Exports of containerized shipments from Japan to China amounted to 855,876 tons in January 2013, increasing 9.7% from a year earlier, according to an announcement made recently by the Japan Maritime Center (JMC).

Trade between Japan and China had been sluggish since the second half of 2012, but in the month in question, shipments from Japan grew year on year for the first time in three months, although shrinking a notable 16.1% from the previous month.

China-bound container exports were brisk on a value basis as well, going up 2.6% to \403.5 billion. On the other hand, freight rates declined from November 2012.

Meanwhile, JMC said that container imports from China to Japan totaled 1,959,990 tons in January, plunging 12.6% from the corresponding month of 2012. They continued to suffer a year-on-year decrease from August last year, although improving a remarkable 11.1% from the previous month.

On a value scale, they increased a minute 0.1% to \1.05 trillion, but freight rates remained stagnant on the inbound route as well, continuing to fall from November last year.
