Container movement increased from South Korea to China but decreased from China to South Korea in 2012, according to a preliminary report compiled by a group of shipping lines catering to the two Asian nations.
The Yellow Sea Liners Community (YSLC) said that containers from South Korea to China went up 4.1% from the previous year's 1,104,800 TEUs to 1,149,600 TEUs. The year-on-year growth was smaller than expected, owing to sluggishness in steel products and machinery, although semiconductors were favorable.
Meanwhile, those from China to South Korea declined 4.3% from 1,496,900 TEUs to 1,432,600 TEUs in 2012.
Shipments from South Korea to China accounted for 42% in 2011 and 45% in 2012, meaning those from China to South Korea shrank from 58% to 55%.
In total, YSLC member carriers handled 2,582,200 TEUs on the trade, which fell 0.8% from 2,601,700 TEUs registered in 2011.
