South Korean ports handled a total of 1.84 million TEUs of containerized shipments in January 2013, which represented a year-on-year increase of 2.8% from 1.79 million TEUs, according to the nation's Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs (MLTM).
Foreign cargoes grew 2.4% to 1.076 million TEUs thanks to improvements in exports to the U.S., China and other destinations, while transshipment (T/S) cargoes rose a more favorable 5.3% to 728,000 TEUs. On the other hand, coastal cargoes plunged 26.9% to 35,000 TEUs.
By individual port, Busan processed 1.388 million TEUs, going up 1.7% from a year earlier. T/S cargoes were particularly brisk at Busan, swelling 3.4% to 692,000 TEUs.
To and from Kwangyang, 173,000 TEUs were moved, which registered a growth of 2.6%. T/S cargoes were robust at Kwangyang, too, which hiked 7.18% to 35,000 TEUs.
A considerable improvement was marked at Incheon due to growth in container movement to and from major trade partners, such as Vietnam and Thailand. Shipments to and from Incheon soared 14.6% to 171,000 TEUs.
