South Korea’ Port of Busan handled a total of 17,023,000 TEUs of containerized shipments in 2012, growing 5.2% year on year to reach an all-time high.

In breakdown, exports and imports accounted for 8,807,600 TEUs, going up 1.1% (exports amounted to 4,426,000 TEUs, climbing 5.2%, and imports, 4,382,000 TEUs, falling 0.5%); transshipment (T/S) cargoes, 8,125,000 TEUs, up 10.5%; and domestic cargoes, 90,000 TEUs, down 27.1%.

Shipments to and from Japan totaled 2,589,000 TEUs, improving 7.1%, which were made up of 1,360,000 TEUs of exports and imports, rising 3.5% and 1,229,000 TEUS of T/S cargoes, swelling 11.3%.

Looking at throughputs at Japanese ports, Osaka processed 252,000 TEUs of containers to and from Busan, going up 5.7%; Tokyo 247,000 TEUs, up 11.7%; Hakata, 240,000 TEUs, up 4.7%; Yokohama, 176,000 TEUs, up 2.7%; and Tomakomai, 147,000 TEUs, down 6.8%.

A notable year-on-year increase was recorded at Shimizu, which handled 60,000 TEUs, soring 21.3%.
