Container movement on the intra-Asia trade declined a minute 0.3% from a year earlier to 1.243 million TEUs in October 2012.

In breakdown, dry cargoes went down 1.3% to 1.165 million TEUs, but reefer cargoes were brisk, surging 17.6% to 64,000 TEUs.

In the first 10 months, 12.588 million TEUs were moved among 12 Asian countries and regions, improving 7.5% year on year.

In October, exports from Japan amounted to 170,000 TEUs, going down 5.9%, and imports to Japan, 205,000 TEUs, down 10%.

Looking at shipments from Japan by destination, those to Thailand soared 19% to 27,000 TEUs, rebounding from the severe decline resulting from the floods that hit the Southeast Asian nation in the second half of 2011.

On the other hand, those to other Asian economies were all diminished from the corresponding month of 2011.

As for imports, those from South Korea picked up 5.5% to 20,000 TEUs; from the Philippines, 2% to 9,500 TEUs; from Singapore, 0.6% to 3,900 TEUs and from Thailand, 0.6% to 25,000 TEUs.

However, containers from other sources were sluggish across the board, decreasing year on year.

The greatest negative growth was made for those from China, which plunged 18.6% to 85,000 TEUs.
