A total of 10,609,900 TEUs of containerized shipments were traded worldwide in September 2012, according to an announcement made recently by Container Trades Statistics Ltd. (CTS) of the U.K.

The total throughput was down 0.25% from a month earlier and 0.45% from a year earlier.

In the third quarter (July-September), 32,311,800 TEUs were moved in total, decreasing 2.8% year on year.

In September, exports from Asia grew 1.4% from the corresponding month of 2011 to 3,888,900 TEUs, but they went down 0.4% from the previous month and 1.8% from the peak they reached in May.

Imports to Asia amounted to 1,735,900 TEUs, falling 8.98% from a year earlier and 4.6% from a month earlier. They suffered a greater decline than any other major economic bloc.

Europe exported 1,374,600 TEUs, increasing 2.56% and imported 1,706,000 TEUs, declining 5.75%.

Outbound shipments from North America waned 2.34% from a year earlier to 1,274,900 TEUs, which diminished 1.25% from a month earlier and 4.8% from where they peaked in May.

Inbound containers to North America totaled 1,863,700 TEUs, which represented a year-on-year improvement of 0.54% but a month-on-month decrease of 1.1%.
