In August 2012, Chinese ports handled a total of 15,116,400 TEUs of containerized shipments, a growth of 4.6% year on year, according to a report unveiled by the nation's Ministry of Transport (MOT).

Container throughput was brisk at both coastal and inland river ports, which were responsible for 13,460,500 TEUs, going up 3.8%, and 1,655,900 TEUs, up 9.3%, respectively.

Focusing on major coastal ports, container lifting was poor at Shanghai, which processed 2,600,000 TEUs, decreasing 6.1%; Shenzhen, 2,203,300 TEUs, 3.8%; Ningbo-Zhoushan, 1,308,800 TEUs, 2.9%; and Guangzhou, 1,229,200 TEUs, 5.2%. Box volume at Hong Kong also fell 9.2% to 1.9 million TEUs in August compared with 2.1 million TEUs handled in the same month last year.

On the other hand, double-digit improvements were made at Qingdao and Tianjin, which handled 1,209,100 TEUs, surging 11.4%, and 1,090,000 TEUs, 10.3%, respectively.
