South Korea's Ministry of Land, Transportation and Maritime Affairs (MLTM) has announced that container throughput in the country totaled 2,016,700 TEUs in May, topping the 2 million TEUs mark for the first time. The figure represents an 8.0% increase compared with 1,867,00 TEUs registered in the same month in 2011.
Export and import containers made a relatively small growth of 2.9% to 1,174,000 TEUs in May, compared with 1,154,000 TEUs for May last year, due to uncertain outlook for the global economy and stagnation of the economic growth in China
Transhipment containers amounted to 805,000 TEUs, up 19.9% compared with 671,000 TEUs in the corresponding period last year, renewing the monthly record for the three consecutive months.
