The combined volume of containerized shipments handled by major shipping companies on the intra-Asia trade in 2011 was steady on almost all routes.
The total was 14,147,000 TEUs, a year-on-year increase of 6.1% from 13,334,000 TEUs, although exports from Japan to 11 other Asian nations declined. Exports from Japan went down 6.1% from 2,204,000 TEUs to 2,069,000 TEUs, but imports rose 5.3% to 2,510,000 TEUs.
In December 2011, the intra-Asia trade saw container throughput improve 5% from a year earlier to 1,276,000 TEUs. Exports from Japan were on a downward trend for two months in a row, going down 9.7% to 181,000 TEUs, but imports gained double-digit growth, surging 12% to 228,000 TEUs.
