In 2011, a total of 35 business operators obtained contracting carriage licenses from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) of Japan, according to the ministry's Policy Bureau.

In 2010, 50 companies were newly registered and approved as contracting carriage operators (namely non-vessel-operating common carriers), showing the number of those authorized to provide NVOCC services in Japan is on the rise.

As international logistics activities are being accelerated in step with the spread of globalization, inquiries about acquiring NVOCC licenses are made almost every day with the MLIT.

The ministry said it is examining tens of applications now, projecting that an increasing number of businesses will continue to launch international multimodal transport services in 2012.

Newly registered and approved NVOCC service providers primarily transport shipments to China and other Asian economies.

As such, it is indicated that times are changing from when most cargoes were exported to the U.S. and Europe, and that logistics is developing into China and other countries and regions of Asia.
