South Korea's Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs has announced that container traffic in the nation for 2011 is estimated to have come to 21.540 million TEUs, up 11.2% compared with 19.369 million TEUs in 2010, hitting a 20 million mark for the first time.

Import and export containers totaled 13.340 million TEUs, up 8.0% from the previous year while transhipment cargo made a double-digit increase of 16.4% from a year earlier to 7.773 million TEUs. Coastal cargo achieved a remarkable growth of 23.9% to 468,000 TEUs due partly to government subsidies encouraging modal shifts.

The port of Busan, the busiest container port in the nation, handled 16.143 million TEUs in 2011, an increase of 13.7% from 2010. As a result, Busan's share in the entire container traffic in the country slightly increased to 74.9% from 73.6% in 2010.

Container throughput at Kwangyang dipped slightly by 1.1% from a year before to 2.064 million TEUs while that of Incheon rose by 4.2% on year to 1.917 million TEUs.
