In August 2011, the volume of containerized shipments transported westbound from Asia to Europe was 1,283,100 TEUs, representing an increase of 4.14% from the 1,232,100 TEUs moved a year earlier, according to a recent report on container trade to and from Europe.

Meanwhile, eastbound containers from Europe to Asia enjoyed a double-digit increase for the first time since February, surging 11.74% from 454,900 TEUs to 508,300 TEUs.

The freight rate index (the average rate of 2008=100 points) for westbound services was 76 points in August, an improvement of 2 points from the previous month, when the index was 74 points, which was the worse performance since August 2010’s 116 points.

Container Trades Statistics Ltd. (CTS) of the U.K., which compiled the report, added that container movement on the Asia/Europe trade was brisk in both directions in the first eight months of 2011.

From January to August, 6,148,900 TEUs were carried from Asia to Europe, going up 5% year on year, and 2,508,500 TEUs from Europe to Asia, up 6%.
