Intra-Asia container trade was steady in August 2011. The combined volume of containerized shipments handled by major shipping companies among 12 Asian economies was 1.146 million TEUs, growing 6.3% from the 1.078 million TEUs transported in August 2010.

Exports from Japan decreased 1.7% to 164,000 TEUs, suffering a year-on-year decrease for the sixth consecutive month while imports to Japan increased for two months in a row, going up 2.5% to 197,000 TEUs.

In the first eight months of 2011, the total went up 5.7% from a year earlier to 9.237 million TEUs. Exports from Japan declined 8% to 1.369 million TEUs owing to the sluggishness incurred in the first four months. In contrast, imports to Japan climbed 3.7% to 1.631 million TEUs.
