Westbound container movement from Asia to Europe increased a minute 1.71% from a year earlier to 1,165,300 TEUs in June 2011, according to a report on trades to and from Europe recently released by Container Trades Statistics Ltd. of the U.K.

Meanwhile, eastbound shipments from Europe to Asia were more brisk, going up 3.2% to 490,500 TEUs.

During the first half (January-June) of 2011, a total of 6,877,700 TEUs were moved from Asia to Europe, going up 5% year on year, and 2,815,400 TEUs from Europe to Asia, up 5.4%.

The freight rate index (the average rate of 2008: 100 points) for westbound services was 77 points in June 2011, plunging 37 points from the 114 points that it marked in June 2010 and establishing the lowest record in 21 months.

The index reached an all-time high of 116 points in July 2010 but has since been on the decline.2
