Combined volume of containerized shipments transported in May 2011 by leading shipping companies on the intra-Asia trade (among 12 economies in the region) amounted to 1.085 million TEUs.

The total went down 0.5% from May 2010, when 1.09 million TEUs were handled, suffering the first year-on-year decline in seven months.

Exports from Japan to the 11 others plunged 19.3% to 145,000 TEUs, incurring a greater decrease than a year earlier, while imports, which had been on an upward trend, began to fall, going down 2.3% to 193,000 TEUs.

During the first five months of 2011, 5.41 million TEUs were moved in total, improving 4.2% year on year to 5.191 million TEUs.

From January to May, Japan exported a total of 835,000 TEUs, down 9.8%, and imported 995,000 TEUs, up 4.4%.
