The volume of containerized shipments transported westbound from Asia to Europe grew in April 2011, according to a report on container traffic to and from Europe.

They increased 3.87% from a year earlier to 1,162,500 TEUs, enjoying a year-on-year improvement for two consecutive months after suffering a decline in February 2011 under the influence of the Lunar New Year.

Those from Europe to Asia were as brisk, rising 3.11% to 491,200 TEUs, going up for four months in a row, or since January 2011.

The report, which was compiled by Container Trade Statistics Ltd. (CTS) of the U.K., added the freight index for westbound shipping services (the average rate of 2008: 100 points) was 80 points in April 2011.

The index fell below the 2008 average for the fifth consecutive month, or since December 2010, and kept going down since it reached a peak at 116 points in July 2010.

On an accumulated scale, container trade was robust in both directions, with eastbound containers climbing 5.8% from a year earlier to 4,497,900 TEUs in the first four months of 2011 and eastbound containers, 4.3% to 1,935,400 TEUs.
