Container trade among 12 Asian economies was brisk in April 2011, led by shipments to and from China and Southeast Asia.

The overall volume of containers that major shipping companies moved in the month in question on the intra-Asia trade was 1.164 million TEUs, which represented a year-on-year increase of 6.1% from the 1.097 million TEUs handled in April 2010.

Exports from Japan to the 11 other countries and regions plunged 14% to 175,000 TEUs, but imports managed to grow from a year earlier, going up 3.7% to 213,000 TEUs.

The accumulated volume of container cargoes transported on the trade in the first four months was 4.325 million TEUs, which improved 5.5% year on year.

Shipments from Japan fell 7.5% to 690,000 TEUs, but those to Japan climbed 6.1% to 803,000 TEUs.
