Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) on April 22 unveiled a guideline for conducting radiation inspections (see the attached file).

The guideline was developed by the ministry’s Ports and Harbours, and Maritime bureaus as a countermeasure against radiation released from the nuclear plants in Fukushima that caused the series of accidents in the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Shipping companies (mainline ship operators) and other parties will measure radiation dose on export containers and oceangoing commercial ships according to the guideline.

When they request to have their inspection results certified, the government of Japan, port and harbor administrators, and Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) will issue certificates.

The system will be launched at the Port of Yokohama on April 28, and at other Keihin ports, it will be introduced later?as soon as they are ready.

The government of Japan as well as port and harbor administrators monitor radiation levels in the air and seawater taken at the Port of Yokohama and other ports, and .
