Combined volume of containerized shipments handled at Chinese ports in the first quarter (January-March) of 2011 was 36,253,100 TEUs, which represented a double-digit increase of 13.1% from a year earlier, according to the Ministry of Transport.

Throughput was favorable at both coastal and inland ports, which handled 32,629,600 TEUs, up 12.8%, and 3,623,500 TEUs, up 16.3%, respectively.

Looking at the Big Five ports, Shanghai processed 7,271,000 TEUs, up 12.1%; Shenzhen, 5,035,000 TEUs, up 2.6%; Ningbo/Zhoushan, 3,371,000 TEUs, up 21.3%; Guangzhou, 2,876,000 TEUs, up 2.1%; and Xiamen, 1,359,000 TEUs, up 5.1%.
