Demand for exporting containerized shipments from China was stable in the second week of January 2011, and as a consequence, freight rates fluctuated moderately.

The China Export Containerized Freight Index (CCFI) was 1,065.32 points, up 0.8% from the previous week, and the Shanghai Container Freight Index (SCFI), 111.84 points, down 1.3%, according to an announcement made on Jan. 14 by the Shanghai Shipping Exchange. (SSE).

By trade, the average fright rate for container services from Shanghai to northern Europe was US$1,342 per TEU, down 2.8%, and to the Mediterranean, $1,212 per TEU, down 1.7%.

On the North America trade, container services were provided at an average rate of $1,977 per FEU from Shanghai to the west coast, down 1.9%, and $3,198 per FEU to the east coast, down 1.3%.

The average on the Shanghai/Australia and New Zealand trade remained nearly unchanged at $874 per TEU.

Container movement from Shanghai to Japan did not change very much from a week earlier, helping the average load factor maintain the 70% line, while the CCFI was 755.09 points, almost leveling off. However, container trade on the route is beginning to increase due to a surge in demand before the Chinese New Year holidays.
