Nittsu Research Institute and Consulting, Inc. (NRIC) recently announced that international shipments to and from Japan will increase slightly in volume both by sea and air in fiscal 2011 (April 2011-March 2012).

Oceangoing containers will grow 2.9% from a year earlier to 12.452 million TEUs and international airfreight, 2.3% to 2.4051 million tons, according to the Tokyo-based organization’s economic and cargo transport forecasts for fiscal years 2010 and 2011.

Exports of oceangoing containers from nine major ports in Japan will go down 3.4% to 5.467 million TEUs in fiscal 2011, said NRIC, but imports will rise 2.5% to 6.985 million TEUs.

Although imports will improve from a year earlier, they will not be as brisk as they were in fiscal 2011, when they swelled slightly over 9% year on year.

Airfreight exports will climb 2.4% to 1.133 million tons ? 1.6% to 177,300 tons on the trans-Pacific route, 1.6% to 177,400 tons on the Japan/Europe route and 2.8% to 778,200 tons on the intra-Asia route, the research institute added.

Imports will go up 2.2% to 1.272 million tons ? 0.7% to 172,000 tons to and from North America, 3% to 200,000 tons to and from Europe ad 2.3% to 899,000 tons to and from other Asian economies.
