Westbound container shipments from Asia to Europe saw a double-digit increase of 25.2% from a year earlier in April 2010, totaling 1.099 million TEUs, according to statistics by the European Liner Affairs Association (ELAA). Eastbound box volume, however, slashed 10.6% from the same period last year to 469,800 TEUs.
As a result of the recovery in container trade, freight rates are also picking up after having bottomed out in March 2009. The freight index (2008=100) for April 2010 was 22% higher than the 2008 level on the Asia to Europe trade and 14% higher on the Europe to Asia container trade.
