A strike by South African port and freight-rail workers which went into the second week on Monday continued through Tuesday and they are set to intensify the walkout over wages in the wake of the breakdown of mediated negotiations between unionized workers and the state transport group Transnet last weekend.

A parallel strike began at South Africa's Passenger Rail Agency (Prasa) on Monday, halting commuter rail operations and affecting two million passengers.

The South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (SATAWU) and the United Transport and Allied Trade Union (UTATU) which represent about 85 percent of Transnet's work force, said 60 percent of Transnet's business operations were disrupted. In the ports backlogs of exports have been rapidly building up with no resolution in sight.
