South African transport worker unions have gone into a strike after breakdown of the wage-hike negotiations with the employer Transnet, South Africa's largest transport company, throwing national transportation into chaos.

Transnet's 54,000 workers belong to two union, the United Transport and Allied Trade Union (UTATU) and South African Transport and Allied Workers (SATAWU).

SATAWU members walked of on Monday and SATAWU workers come out on strike on Wednesday. According to South African shipping line Safmarine, all terminal in Durban remain completely shut down. At Port Elizabeth and Cape Town, only one gang is working currently.
