Westbound container trade from Asia to Europe enjoyed a 20.4% increase in the first three months of 2010 totaling 3.12 million TEUs, according to statistics released by the European Liner affairs Association (ELAA). The figure reflects an uptrend in real volume as well as a rebound from the same period in 2009.

Eastbound containers from Europe to Asia also soared by 21.6% on year to 1.36 million TEUs in the first quarter of the year.

In March, westbound volume climbed 10% from a year earlier to 1.06 million TEUs, while eastbound box traffic rose 9.9% on year to 495,000 TEUs.
