Container shipments moving from Asia to Europe continue rapid recovery from last year's market crash, soaring more than 20% during the first three months of the year.

In the first quarter of 2010, westbound box traffic from Asia to Europe rose 20.4% from the same period in 2009, to 3,119,800 TEUs, according to the European Liner Affairs Association (ELAA). Volume jumped 53.5% in February after a 9.6% growth in January but slowed to 10.5% in March.

Eastbound container trade also registered a strong 21.6% increase over the same period in 2009, to 1,362,100 TEUs, but growth is noticeably waning from January's 34.4% and February's 25.3%.
