Containerized shipments traded between South Korea and China improved notably during the first quarter of 2010 (January-March), soaring 22% to 540,394 TEUs from the 442,865 TEUs handled in the same period last year.

Due to the ongoing global recession, annual container trade between the two Asian nations had suffered negative growth for two years in a row, decreasing 5% year on year in 2008 and 12% in 2009.

In breakdown, local shipments accounted for 416,449 TEUs during the first three months of 2010, up 17.8 percent from 353,553 TEUs a year earlier, and feeder cargoes, 123,945 TEUs, up 38.8% from 89,312 TEUs.

Exports from South Korea, including local and feeder containers, were brisk, going up 8.1% from 215,869 TEUs year on year to 233,424 TEUs, while those from China were even better, surging 35.2% from the previous year to 416,449 TEUs.
