Amid the continuing installation work of new gantry cranes in Bangkok Port, berthing delays are prompting shipping lines to skip Bangkok or redirect their port of call to Laem Chabang.

The construction work began on March 29 and will continue until June 25. Four new gantry cranes out of 14 on the seven berths at Eastern Quay Terminals are being replaced with the old ones.

Container backlogs on the container yards are chronic in the port. On top of that, while the replacement work is progressing, two berths are unusable. This is aggravating the ever-persistent backlogs and causing long queues of trucks.
