The number of used vehicles exported from Japan almost halved in 2009, totaling 675,858 units, down 49.8% compared with 1,347,026 units in 2008. The record plunge is attributable mainly to a sharp fall-off in exports to Russia and Chile, down 90.6% and 58.8% respectively. Used car exports to Russia accounted for approximately 40% of Japan’s total exports of used automobiles in 2008 with 563,000 units while those to Chile amounted to 123,944 units in the previous year.

Destination-wise, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) topped the rankings with 89,966 units in 2009, down 8.4% from the previous year, followed by New Zealand with 57,427 units, down 2.8% year on year. Ranked third was South Africa which saw a significant 15.7% growth to 55,304 units. Russia slumped from top to fourth place with 53,180 units in 2009.
