The Port of Shimizu in central Japan handled 33,808 TEUs of foreign-trade containerized shipments in May, down 6% year on year, according to preliminary statistics unveiled by the Shizuoka Prefectural Government’s Shimizu Port Authority. Exports accounted for 16,335 TEUs, down 9.3%, and imports, 17,473 TEUs, down 2.6%.

As for loaded containers, 12,041 TEUs were exported, down 11.8%, and 17,004 TEUs were imported, down 3.2%, for a total of 29,045 TEUs, down 7%, while empty containers totaled 4,763 TEUs, up 0.6%. Domestic container added up to 8,532 TEUs, down 0.9%, making overall throughput at the port 42,340 TEUs, down 5%, its first year-on-year contraction in five months.

In the first five months (January-May), Shimizu exported 83,479 TEUs, up 5.6%, and imported 85,667 TEUs, up 1.2%, for a total of 169,416 TEUs, up 3.4%. Exports of loaded containers came to 64,038 TEUs, up 5.2%, and imports, 81,389 TEUs, up 1.2%, for a total of 145,427 TEUs. Empties numbered 23,989 TEUs in total, up 6.3%. Domestic containers aggregated 47,135 TEUs, up 0.9%, for a combined foreign-trade and domestic volume of 216,551 TEUs, up 2.8%.
