The Drewry World Container Index (WCI) increased 3% from the previous week to $2,286 per FEU in Week 19 after three consecutive weekly declines, driven by higher freight rates on the trans-Pacific and Asia–Europe trade lanes. From a year earlier, it was up 10%.
On the trans-Pacific trade route, rates increased last week following the implementation of emergency fuel surcharges (EFSs) and peak season surcharges (PSSs) by carriers. Rates from Shanghai to New York rose 7% ($238) to $3,721 per FEU, while those from Shanghai to Los Angeles increased 5% ($132) to $3,062 per FEU.
Spot rates on the Asia–Europe trade route remained stable. Rates from Shanghai to Rotterdam increased 2% ($43) to $2,170 per FEU, while those from Shanghai to Genoa edged up 1% ($36) to $3,075 per FEU.
