Containers from Asia to Europe amounted to 1.66 million TEUs in February, which jumped 48.5% year on year as Lunar New Year fell on an earlier day in 2025, according to statistics compiled by the Japan Maritime Center (JMC) from data provided by the U.K.’s Container Trades Statistics (CTS). They increased for four months in a row for a new February record. In the first two months, they added up to 3.54 million TEUs, up 22.4%.
In February, 1.32 million TEUs were exported from China and Hong Kong, up 65.1%; 137,433 TEUs from other parts of Northeast Asia, which remained nearly unchanged; and 200,531 TEUs from Southeast Asia, up 11.7%.
By destination, 1.01 million TEUs were exported to North Europe, up 56.7%; 310,394 TEUs to the Western Mediterranean, up 37.8%; and 334,492 TEUs to the Eastern Mediterranean, up 36.7%.
Meanwhile, imports from Europe to Asia stayed weak in February, falling 3% to 484,057 TEUs for three straight months of negative growth. In January-February, they totaled 907,067 TEUs, down 5.2%.
From North Europe, 321,084 TEUs were imported, down 9.4%; from the Western Mediterranean, 82,454 TEUs, up 2.5%; and from the Eastern Mediterranean, 80,519 TEUs, up 24.9%.
To China, 240,719 TEUs were imported, up 3.1%; to other parts of Northeast Asia, 98,189 TEUs, down 8.7%; to Southeast Asia, 145,144 TEUs, down 8.2%.
