The Drewry World Container Index (WCI) increased 1% from the previous week to $2,309 per FEU in Week 15, mainly driven by rising rates on the trans-Pacific and -Atlantic trade routes. From a year earlier, it was up 2%.

Spot rates from Rotterdam to New York jumped 25% to $1,968 per FEU last week, breaking the usual trend of stability on the trans-Atlantic trade. The primary catalyst for this increase is a 13% month-on-month contraction in available ocean capacity for April.

On the trans-Pacific route, spot rates from Shanghai to New York increased 7% ($237) to $3,671 per FEU, while those to Los Angeles, 9% ($247) to $2,910 per FEU.

Spot rates on the Asia–Europe trade declined last week, with those from Shanghai to Genoa falling 3% ($109) to $3,420 per FEU and from Shanghai–Rotterdam, 9% ($235) to $2,308 per FEU.

According to Drewry’s Container Capacity Insight, only one blank sailing has been announced for this week on the Asia–Europe trade, indicating relatively stable capacity.
