Container trade from Japan to the U.S. shrank 4.1% year on year in number to 42,657 TEUs (based on volumes at ports of origin), Descartes Datamyne announced last week. From January, it plunged 15.3%, and in the first two months (January-February), it totaled 93,034 TEUs, down 3.3%.

In February, direct shipments from Japan to the U.S. amounted to 29,981 TEUs, down 1.1%, and those transshipped on the way, 13,376 TEUs, down 10%, which accounted for 31.4% of the total, down by two percentage points.

Of the transshipped containers, South Korea was responsible for 8,753 TEUs, down 10.3%; China, 2,628 TEUs, up 84.6%; Taiwan, 1,201 TEUs, down 38.3%; and Singapore, 304 TEUs, down 78.8%.

Of the direct shipments, 12,197 TEUs were from Tokyo, up 0.5%; 8,570 TEUs from Nagoya, down 3.7%; 5,439 TEUs from Kobe, down 8.8%; 2,325 TEUs from Yokohama, up 36.9%; and 343 TEUs from Osaka, up 6.5%. Containers from Yokohama, in particular, jumped last month as they rebounded from an extremely low level in February 2025, when some containers were put off to March.
