Container exports from Asia to Europe amounted to 1.88 million TEUs in January, up 6% year on year for three consecutive months of growth and a new monthly record, according to the Japan Maritime Center (JMC), which has referred to statistics provided by the U.K.’s Container Trades Statistics (CTS).
By origin, 1.53 million TEUs were from China and Hong Kong, up 5.8%; 128,577 TEUs from other parts of Northeast Asia, up 3.4%; and 221,753 TEUs from Southeast Asia, up 8.8%.
By destination, 1.14 million TEUs were to North Europe, up 3.6%; 362,180 TEUs to the Western Mediterranean, up 10.2%; and 370,389 TEUs to the Eastern Mediterranean, up 9.8%.
Meanwhile, imports from Europe to Asia were sluggish in January, shrinking 7.8% from a year earlier to 421,619 TEUs, a year-on-year contraction for two back-to-back months.
By origin, 279,426 TEUs were from North Europe, down 8.8%; 64,179 TEUs from the Western Mediterranean, down 15.4%; and 78,014 TEUs from the Eastern Mediterranean, up 3.9%.
By destination, 207,893 TEUs were to China, down 3.9%; 87,653 TEUs to other parts of Northeast Asia, down 8.9%; and 126,071 TEUs to Southeast Asia, down 13%.
