U.S. container imports from 10 major Asian economies amounted to 1.56 million TEUs in February (based on volumes at ports of origin), down 4.7% year on year for six consecutive months of decline, according to statistics compiled by Descartes Datamyne from data provided by the Customs and Border Protection (CBP). In the first two months, they totaled 3.28 million TEUs, down 6%. The overall volume of containerized shipments the U.S. imported last month came to 2.11 million TEUs, down 5.2%.
By origin, imports from China plunged 11.8% to 827,387 TEUs but managed to account for the largest part of the pie. Those from Vietnam were more robust, jumping 41.8% to 236,012 TEUs. In contrast, those from South Korea, India, and Singapore were all sluggish, plummeting 14.3% to 172,668 TEUs, 14.4% to 62,066 TEUs, and 16.7% to 59,401 TEUs, respectively. Imports from Japan shrank 0.3% to 29,570 TEUs, coming in ninth place.
