The Port of Niigata in Niigata, central Japan handled 169,465 TEUs of international containerized shipments in 2025, up 1.9% from the previous calendar year, according to Niigata Prefecture. The Port of Naoetsu, located in the same prefecture, processed 27,877 TEUs, up 5.9%, for a combined throughput of 197,352 TEUs, up 2.5%.

Loaded containers accounted for 114,294 TEUs at Niigata, up 0.7%, and 21,337 TEUs at Naoetsu, up 11.4%, for a total of 135,631 TEUs, up 2.3%.

Exports of loaded containers from Niigata amounted to 37,702 TEUs, up 0.3% due to briskness in paper and pulp. Imports added up to 76,592 TEUs, up 0.9% thanks to favorableness in processed food products, construction materials, and daily necessities.

Naoetsu exported 5,315 TEUs of loaded containers, up 28.6%, as notable increases were registered in industrial machinery and chemical products. Imports rose 6.7% to 16,022 TEUs owing to robustness in chemical agents that are materials of chemical products and construction materials.
