U.S. container imports from 10 major Asian economies amounted to 20.19 million TEUs in 2025, down 0.6% from the previous calendar year, according to statistics compiled by Descartes Datamyne from data provided by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). U.S. overall imports totaled 28.09 million TEUs, down 0.1%.
Looking at imports from the top five origins individually, those from China numbered 10.59 million TEUs, down 8.8%; from Vietnam, 2.72 million TEUs, up 33.4%; from South Korea, 2.33 million TEUs, down 23.8%; from Singapore, 903,128 TEUs, down 0.2%; and from Taiwan, 856,956 TEUs, down 5.6%. Imports from Japan were ranked eighth, adding up to 408,910 TEUs, down 8.5%.
In 2021, China enjoyed a share of 61.8%, but it fell to over 57% in 2023 and 2024 and to 52.5% in 2025. In contrast, imports from Vietnam just accounted for 7.8% in 2021 but swelled to 10% in 2024 and 13.5% in 2025. Likewise, Thailand’s share increased from 2.8% in 2021 to 3.6% in 2025. Those from Japan, which continued to account for approximately 2% from 2021, held a share of 2% in 2025.
By commodity, furniture; bedding, mattresses, mattress supports, cushions, and similar stuffed furnishings; lamps and lighting fittings, not elsewhere specified or included; illuminated signs, illuminated nameplates and the like; prefabricated buildings (HS Code 94) fell 1% to 3.27 million TEUs. Plastics and articles thereof (HS Code 39) increased 8.2% to 2.16 million TEUs. Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS Code 84) decreased 0.1% to 2.16 million TEUs. Electrical machinery and equipment, and parts thereof, including sound and video recorders and reproducers (HS Code 85) declined 5.1% to 1.76 million TEUs. Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling-stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS Code 87) fell 9.3% to 1.09 million TEUs.
