Containerized shipments from Japan to the U.S. amounted to 48,675 TEUs in November (based on volumes at port of origin), down 8.4% year on year, Descartes Datamyne unveiled yesterday. From the previous month, they shrank 8.7%. In the first 11 months (January-November), they totaled 577,146 TEUs.

In November, direct shipments from Japan to the U.S. accounted for 29,894 TEUs, down 19.5%, while the remaining 18,781 TEUs were transshipped on the way, up 17.2%, representing a transshipment (T/S) rate of 38.6%. As for T/S containers, 12,104 TEUs were via South Korea, up 13.2%; 4,221 TEUs via China, up 139.4%; 1,547 TEUs via Taiwan, down 33.1%; and 380 TEUs via Singapore, down 54.7%.

Looking at direct shipments, 10,596 TEUs were from Tokyo in November, down 29.8%; 8,938 TEUs from Nagoya, down 20.4%; 5,969 TEUs from Kobe, down 21.2%; 3,481 TEUs from Yokohama, up 59.1%; and 353 TEUs from Osaka, up 47.1%. The volume declines at Tokyo and Nagoya were attributed to a decrease in auto-related cargo.

By commodity, Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS Code 84) were down 2.3% to 12,470 TEUs; Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling-stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS Code 87), down 20.4% to 9,355 TEUs; Rubber and products thereof (HS Code 40), up 21.9% to 6,641 TEUs; Plastics and products thereof (HS Code 39), down 8.5% to 4,621 TEUs; and Electrical machinery and equipment, and parts thereof, including sound and video recorders and reproducers (HS Code 85), down 17.1% to 2,544 TEUs.
