The ministries of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) and Environment (MOE) of Japan yesterday approved six new applicants for the government of Japan’s fiscal 2025 project to promote zero-emission vessels running on ammonia, hydrogen and other green fuels. Including the fiscal 2024 project, a total capital investment of ¥190 billion (US$1.2 billion) will now be made in the shipbuilding as well as ship machinery and equipment industries.
By laying a foundation for supplying zero-emission vessels and other technologies need to diffuse to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, Tokyo is working to promote market introduction to reduce CO2 emissions and enhance the global competitiveness of the domestic ship-related industries. In its fiscal 2025 promotion project, it supports the development of facilities for manufacturing engines, fuel tanks, fuel supply systems and others needed to build zero-emission vessels and those for fitting ships with such ship machinery and equipment.
Applications, accepted from June 6 July 22, were examined by a third-party committee of external experts. The six approved applications were submitted by Asakawa Shipbuilding, Shin Kurushima Dockyard, Taiyo Electric and Mizuho-Toshiba Leasing, Tsuneishi Iron Works, Namura Shipbuilding and The Hakodate Dock, and Hitachi Zosen Marine Engine.
