Combined container throughput at the top 15 EU ports came to 76.81 million TEUs in the first nine months (January-September), up 5.9% year on year, according to PortEconomics.
Holding the leading share of the pie, Rotterdam handled 13.82 million TEUs, up 3%, followed by a narrow margin by Antwerp-Brugge, which processed 13.53 million TEUs. Containers to and from Hamburg, which finished in third place, amounted to 7.8 million TEUs, up 8.4%. The top three ports were, as such, responsible for 35.15 million TEUs, up 4.4%.
Hamburg's resurgence was attributed to increased port calls linked to new alliance structures-notably the Gemini Cooperation. Figures suggest a German port system revival as also Wilhelmshaven, which handled 44.45 million TEUs, up 10%, and Bremerhaven experienced healthy growth.
Gdansk, one of the only three ports achieving double-digit growth, handled 2.24 million TEUs, up 15.4%, largely driven by the launch of a new terminal at the Baltic hub.
